Year 388
Araluen
For the past 55 years, since the end of the second war with Morgarath, the Kingdom of Araluen has experience a relative state of peace, though there were many close calls that could have ended that peace had it not been for the acts of Will Treaty, King Horace Altman, and many others. Unfortunately, such heroes cannot remain forever, and now a new generation of leaders has risen. The country has reached a turning point as it ushers in a new king. Treaties are being renewed, and new challenges are arising as King William takes the throne. He’s not alone in dealing with the new issues however.
The Ranger Corps
Lilythe Ashecroft, one of William’s advisors and Commandant of the Ranger Corps, has had her fair share of trouble too, with rumors of a Temujai alliance with the Magyaran pirates popping up among some of the ship captains in the port cities. The idea of the Temujai being able to transport their forces overseas was a terrifying one. The Temujai military had only been defeated once, by the Skandians, and that defeat had been due in large part to her former mentor, Will Treaty. She had a large enough set of shoes to fill as the new Commandant without such troubling rumors. The new leader of the famous Araluen Rangers will have to work hard trying to gather as much information as possible about this potential threat before it reaches their shores.
The trouble doesn’t end there however, with the opportunity for women to join the Ranger Corps still a rather new concept, many of the current mentors don’t know how to go about their training. A lot of mentors with female apprentices are being soft on the girls out of fear of hurting them, causing them to be unprepared for Ranger life and leave their training unfinished. Other’s don’t believe women should be allowed in the Corps at all, some even going as far as to try and have Lilythe thrown out. The new Commandant of the Rangers has her work cut out for her trying to help Araluen while battling enemies inside her own organization. The first part of the code is Golden.
Skandia
Skandia has long been at peace with her former prey. The wolf no longer hunts the rabbits of the Araluen Isle, Toscana, or Arrida. Nor does it prey on the “Bantam Roosters” of Nihon-Ja. The treaties that Oberjarl Erak Starfollower and Will Treaty made almost a century ago still prove strong, and Araluen has sent hundreds of thousands of reels in trade to and from Skandia. The mutual defense treaty between the Celts and Araluen has been extended to cover the sea wolves and their territories as well.
Erak Starfollower is long-dead, with Hal Mikkelson on his way to the same fate. The former skirl of the Heron is incredibly old by Skandian standards, and yet his design still holds its place as the fastest ever to cross paths with an enemy of the nation. Much of the fleet has been built or rebuilt in this design, and now young Cross of the Bloodmane has distinguished himself as a combat skirl against the increasing number of Magyaran pirates swarming the north. He is a sure bet for the seat of Oberjarl, and Hal Mikkelson is more than ready to abdicate to live his final days in peace.
The Rest of The World
Gallica has been united under a stronger government with a new king, however the troubles aren’t over for this kingdom either. Some of the warlords who didn’t want to swear fealty to the new king have defected, choosing instead to aid the Temujai and the Magyarans. The southern part of Gallica is now under Temujia control, and the new King is desperate to get word across the sea to Araluen in a desperate plea for aid against these terrible invaders. With their largest port blocked off by Magyaran ships, Gallica is having a hard time getting their messages through.
Celtica has recently undergone changes as well, though theirs are for the better it seems. The kingdom of miners has been working hard under their new leadership to form a stronger military to honor the mutual defense treaty with Araluen. It has also been working hard in a technological sense, with many new creative minds coming up with interesting advancements in technology. One such project being the discovery of new uses for the explosive black powder they sometimes use in mining, though the Skandian’s may be ahead of them as far as inventiveness is concerned.
Clonmel, one of the Kingdoms of Hibernia, has also signed a Treaty with Araluen. The new king of this kingdom remembered how Will and Halt had helped drive off the cult known as the Outcasts, and reached out to Araluen for a treaty between the two countries. With this particular Hibernian King being more willing to trust others than those before him, there is hope that Hibernia could one day either be united, or at least a bit friendlier in terms of trade and aid should things in the world go wrong, which will be helpful with the coming Temujai threat.
Iberion has been awfully quiet lately, especially with the Temujai knocking on their doorstep. The country of raiders and slavers is on the brink of an invasion by the horsemen from the Eastern Steppes, but it doesn’t seem shaken by this fact. If any of the rumors whispered by sailors in the ports are to be believe, Iberion’s government seems to be welcoming the feared warriors. An alliance between Iberion, Magyara, and the Temujai is not something to be taken lightly, and, if these rumors are true, Araluen and the rest of the world have some troubling times ahead of them.
